About the BBC
The BBC is the home broadcaster of The London 2012 Olympic Games. As well as domestic coverage the BBC is likely to assist in the operation that provides content for the rest of the world.
The Athens Olympic Broadcasting Organisation:
- Televised more than 4,000 hours of live Olympic coverage
- Provided coverage of 300 Olympic events
- Utilised more than 1,000 cameras and 450 video tape machines
- Employed 3,700 personnel
- Worked with more than 12,000 accredited rights-holding broadcast personnel
Over the next four years leading to 2012 the technology landscape will have developed considerably, including the final switch-off of analogue television services, ubiquity of access to high speed broadband services as well as developments in mobile broadcasting services; Beijing 2008 and London 2012 will mark the emergence of truly 'Digital Olympics'.
In addition to this are developments in the demands of audiences in terms of the way they expect to consume, create and share content in a digital environment. The BBC is uniquely-placed to use the breadth and depth of its operation to inspire a generation in the Olympic dream.
As the BBC prepares for the London 2012 Olympic Games there are a number of challenges that the organisation faces; these challenges have both a technical and a content focus.
